I’m standing outside my office sipping a cup of coffee in the middle of a snow flurry. It’s cold out but I don’t care it feels nice the java is keeping me warm anyway. I like feeling the wind in my hair I like feeling the snow hit my face I like seeing the white flecks stick to my all black outfit. it didn’t really snow at all in the city this year it was a pretty mild winter. No large dumps of snow that you have to trudge through no random sheets of ice on the sidewalks that you have to pay attention to. Not really many freezing weekends where you and your friends still go out anyway even if feels like your gonna shiver to death.
the concept of seasons is still kind of new to me im from california i didnt have “seasons” growing up there was either wet season or dry season. well then there was a bunch of droughts starting in like 2010 so then it became sometimes you wear a sweater sometimes you just wear a t shirt. it didn’t really matter. everything was accessible you could do anything go anywhere. you could go to the beach in february or july and it didn’t matter the weather would be the same the ocean would be the same temperature (freezing cold) there would still be waves to surf on.
but now im on the east coast now there’s real seasons there’s four of them!! and they’re all different! they all have different energies different vibes. you can’t do the same shit in that you do in august that you do in like. march. like i couldn’t go outside and grill right now it’s too cold for that. i like that. i like that you have a short window for doing things and then thats it like that you have to experience things NOW, in this MOMENT, before the window slams shut and you never know if you’ll get that chance again but knowing deep down in your gut that you never will. i like that you’re at the mercy of natures heel, that you’re under the sway of something more powerful than you that you can never grapple with or ever ever control or really fully understand but you have to deal with it you have to work with it because its there whether you like it or not.
my favorite season is fall. the sun finally starts to cool off, you’re free of the extreme heat spell of august. it’s getting a little chilly but not too cold enough to go out. you can still walk around or hang out at the park or go on a hike. the days start getting shorter and the nights longer. you can layer your clothes again and dress a little nicer. all the leaves on the trees are yellow and there’s a glorious peak of color before they all wither and die off.
sometimes ill go upstate or to canada and all the hills are covered with a color symphony all these different hues of orange and yellow, the leaves having peaked all at slightly different times so. its so beautiful. in a couple of weeks the leaves will fall off and the trees will be barren and the wind chill will get worse and worse and the days will be so short and the sun so weak you feel like you’re in a perpetual darkness but that all comes later i’ll worry about that when it comes. now i’m just enjoying the moment. maybe i can treasure it if i remember it.
fall is just incredible stuff. highly recommend spring also. underrated but may be touring in your area soon
